The good news is that you can actually withdraw the money any time, but there are certain things to consider before you do so.
Basically a Roth IRA consists of two categories of money. One category is the money contributed by the Roth IRA account holder and the other category is the earnings from these contributions. The contribution is always made from after tax dollar and the earnings too are tas free. However, it is just the contributions that can be withdrawn at any time without any penalties or taxes. In case you want to cash out the earnings, you have to wait until you are 59.5 years or older.
People actually think that the Roth IRA and the traditional IRA have similar features. But this is not true. For example, a Roth IRA is funded by after tax money, while a traditional IRA is funded with pre tax money. In a traditional IRA, you cannot withdraw the contributions until you reach the age of 59.5 years.
A word of caution. Just because the money in the IRA can be withdrawn any time, it does not mean you should. This is because the money in the fund is tax free and hence, it can have a huge benefit in your retirement years.
